Geneva, Switzerland

Geneva is the second most populous city in Switzerland (after Zürich), and is the most populous city of Romandy (the French-speaking part of Switzerland). It is situated where the Rhône River exits Lake Geneva (French Lac Léman) and is the capital of the Republic and Canton of Geneva. The population within the traditional city limits is approximately 190,000, and that of the metropolitan area — which extends into neighboring France and the Swiss Canton of Vaud — about 960,000.

Geneva is widely regarded as a global city, mainly due to the presence of numerous international organizations, including the headquarters of many of the agencies of the United Nations. A 2007 survey found Geneva to have the second highest quality of living in the world (narrowly outranked by Zürich). It is easy to see why as parks, cultural opportunities, and more enhance the charm of the city. Geneva is often referred to as the “city of parks” due to the fact that over one quarter of the city is covered by public parks. The ancient Old Town is a maze of sloping cobblestone streets and alleyways filled with cafes, boutiques and historical landmarks. Finally, the city is home to more than thirty museums and galleries presenting a wide array of cultural and historical offerings. Geneva clearly deserves its lofty quality of life ranking.

Geneva will host 3 matches of the UEFA EURO 2008. They will take place at the Stade de Geneve, a great venue that in additional to the field has a hotel, TV studios, office and conference facilities and a cultural center.
