The Open Championship, or simply The Open
(typically referred to as the British Open outside the UK), holds a certain
prestige all its own as the oldest of the four major championships in men's
golf. It is also unique in that it is the only major held outside the USA. The
Open is the third major to take place each year following The Masters and the
U.S. Open and before the PGA Championship. The event rotates through nine
historic links courses in the United Kingdom. The 2009 open will take place at
the Westin Turnberry Resort, a course on the southwest coast of Scotland.
Turnberry has previously hosted The Open in 1977, 1986, and 1994. It will host
again in 2009 after a fifteen year absence.
